Primary Applications in Oil & Gas

• Paraffin and Asphaltene Removal: Xylene is a frequent component of paraffin solvents used to clear tubing and pipelines clogged with heavy wax deposits or asphaltic materials.
• Well Workover Operations: It serves as an effective solvent and emulsion breaker during workover procedures to clean up reservoirs and improve flow.
• Fuel Additive: A portion of mixed xylenes is blended into gasoline and aviation fuels to improve octane ratings and enhance combustion performance.
• Drilling Fluid Testing: Historically, a 50/50 mixture of xylene and isopropanol (IPA) was used to break oil-mud emulsions during alkalinity and chloride titrations, though many operations have transitioned to alternative materials like propylene glycol normal propyl ether (PNP).
• Industrial Maintenance: It is widely used as a heavy-duty degreaser and cleaning agent for steel parts, manufacturing equipment, and surface preparation before applying protective coatings.
• Chemical Intermediate: Xylene (particularly the p-isomer) is a critical feedstock for producing terephthalic acid (TPA), which is essential for manufacturing the polyester resins and plastics used in industrial packaging.

• Appearance: A clear, colourless liquid with a characteristic sweet odour.
• Solvency: High solvency for oils, greases, resins, and organic compounds, with a medium-to-slow evaporation rate that supports smoother application finishes.
• Hazards: Highly flammable and volatile; its vapours can form explosive mixtures with air at room temperature.
