XCD Polymer (Xanthan Gum)
CAS - 11138 - 66 - 2

Application

XCD Polymer is a high-molecular-weight xanthan gum biopolymer (CAS 11138-66-2) used primarily as a viscosifier and rheology modifier in the oil and gas industry. It is valued for its ability to maintain stable fluid properties in water-based systems, especially under the high-salinity and extreme temperature conditions common in downhole environments.

Core Applications

  • Drilling Fluids (Muds):
    • Cuttings Suspension: Provides high viscosity at low shear rates to keep drill cuttings suspended and prevent them from settling when circulation stops.
    • Hole Cleaning: Improves the transport of debris and heavier solids (like gravel) from the wellbore to the surface.
    • Wellbore Stability: Helps form a low-permeability filter cake on the wellbore wall to prevent collapses and protect the oil formation.
  • Completion and Workover Fluids:
    • Maintains fluid viscosity to ensure zonal isolation and suspends bridging or weighting agents.
    • Reduces fluid loss into permeable formations during well finalization or maintenance.
  • Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR):
    • Used in polymer flooding to increase the viscosity of injected water.
    • Improves sweep efficiency by reducing the mobility ratio between water and oil, leading to higher extraction rates.
  • Hydraulic Fracturing (Fracking):
    • Acts as a thickening agent to effectively carry and place proppants (like sand) into rock fractures.

Key Performance Properties

  • Pseudoplasticity (Shear Thinning): Becomes thin and easy to pump under high shear (pressure) but thickens rapidly once shear is removed, allowing for both efficient flow and excellent suspension.
  • Thermal & Chemical Stability: Typically stable up to 250°F (121°C) and across a wide pH range (typically 5–11), resisting degradation from acids, alkalis, and salts.
  • Salt Tolerance: Unlike many synthetic polymers, it remains effective in high-brine and saturated salt environments.

Environmental Safety: As a natural polysaccharide, it is biodegradable and non-toxic, making it preferred for offshore and eco-sensitive operations.
