Application
Causticized Lignite (CAS 68131-04-4), also known as Sodium Humate, is a high-performance additive primarily used in the oil and gas industry to enhance the stability and efficiency of water-based drilling fluids.
Primary Applications in Oil & Gas
- Filtration & Fluid Loss Control:
- Forms a thin, low-permeability filter cake on the wellbore wall.
- Minimizes the loss of drilling fluid into permeable formations, ensuring wellbore integrity.
- Effectively reduces High-Temperature/High-Pressure (HTHP) fluid loss.
- Rheology & Viscosity Modification:
- Acts as a mud thinner or deflocculant to reduce the viscosity and gel strength of drilling muds.
- Controls the flow characteristics of the fluid, making it easier to circulate through the rig pumps.
- Shale Stabilization:
- Inhibits the swelling and disintegration of reactive shale formations.
- Reduces operational risks like stuck pipe incidents or borehole collapse.
- Thermal Stability:
- Maintains performance in deep-well, horizontal, and high-temperature drilling environments (often exceeding 200°C/400°F).
- pH & Contamination Management:
- Serves as a pH modifier to maintain an alkaline environment (often around pH 13).
- Reduces the adverse effects of contaminants like salt, anhydrite, and gypsum on drilling fluid properties.
Key Advantages
- Cost-Effectiveness: Less expensive compared to synthetic polymers or alternative filtration control agents.
- Environmental Compatibility: Derived from natural lignite coal, it is generally considered non-toxic and eco-friendly.
- Versatility: Compatible with freshwater, saltwater, and seawater-based mud systems.
Recommended Usage
- Dosage: Typically added at concentrations ranging from 3.0% to 5.0% or 2 to 12 lb/bbl depending on drilling parameters.
- Synergy: Often used in conjunction with lignosulfonates in dispersed mud systems to enhance overall effectiveness.
