Application

Caustic Soda (Sodium Hydroxide) with CAS number 1310-73-2 and 99-100% purity is a powerful alkaline compound used extensively in industrial manufacturing, chemical processing, and water treatment. It is commonly available in solid forms such as flakes, pearls (beads), and pellets.

Technical Specifications

According to manufacturers like Avantor and Spectrum Chemical, the high-purity solid form typically exhibits the following properties:

  • Chemical Formula: NaOH.
  • Purity/Assay: 99% to 99.99% depending on the specific grade (Technical, FCC, or ACS).
  • Melting Point: Approximately 318°C to 323°C.
  • Boiling Point: 1390°C.
  • Density: 2.13 g/cm³ at 20°C.
  • Solubility: Highly soluble in water, ethanol, and glycerol, but insoluble in acetone. It is deliquescent, meaning it readily absorbs moisture from the air.

Industrial and Consumer Applications

Caustic soda is a fundamental raw material used across diverse sectors:

  • Chemical Manufacturing: Used to produce sodium salts, detergents, and as a reactive intermediate in organic syntheses.
  • Pulp and Paper: Essential for the delignification of wood in the Kraft process.
  • Soap and Textiles: Used in the saponification of fats for soap making and as a mercerizing agent for cotton fabrics.
  • Water Treatment: Primarily used for pH regulation and neutralizing acidic waste streams.
  • Food Industry: Food-grade (FCC) sodium hydroxide is used for chemical peeling of fruits/vegetables and as a thickening agent.
  • Cleaning: High-purity flakes are used in heavy-duty drain cleaners to dissolve fats and proteins.

Safety and Handling

Due to its highly corrosive nature, strict safety protocols are required:

  • Health Hazards: Contact can cause severe chemical burns and permanent tissue damage, particularly to the eyes.
  • Protective Equipment: Personnel must wear gloves, protective eyewear, and face masks or respirators to avoid inhaling fumes.
  • Storage: Must be stored in cool, dry, and ventilated warehouses in tightly sealed containers to prevent moisture absorption and clatting.
