Application
Citric Acid Anhydrous (CAS 77-92-9) is a versatile, non-toxic organic acid used across the oil and gas lifecycle, primarily for iron sequestration, pH control, and scale removal.
Primary Applications in Oil & Gas
- Iron Control & Sequestration:
- Acts as a powerful chelating agent to bind soluble iron (Fe²⁺/Fe³⁺) during well stimulation and acidizing.
- Prevents iron from precipitating as iron hydroxide, which can clog the formation and reduce well permeability.
- Reduces the risk of iron-induced crosslinking in polymers like xanthan gum, maintaining fluid viscosity.
- Well Stimulation & Acidizing:
- Used as a “mild” alternative to hydrochloric acid (HCl) for dissolving mineral scales like calcium carbonate and iron oxides.
- Stabilizes pH levels in acid blends to improve the efficiency of treatments.
- Protects expensive well tubulars and equipment from corrosion during acid treatments.
- Drilling Fluid Management:
- Cement Contamination: Effectively reduces the high alkalinity (pH) caused by cement contamination during drilling operations.
- Calcium Removal: Precipitates and removes calcium ions from water-based drilling muds.
- Polymer Stabilization: Prevents the formation of “fish-eyes” (undissolved lumps) when mixing polymers.
- Scale Inhibition & Cleanup:
- Dissolves and prevents scale deposits in pipelines and wellbores, ensuring smooth fluid flow.
- Used in post-drilling cleanup to remove debris and prepare the well for production.
