1. High-Temperature, High-Pressure (HTHP) Valve Lubrication

Oilfield valves, chokes, and actuators operate under extreme pressures and temperatures that wash away or degrade standard hydrocarbon greases.

• Application: 60,000 CPS silicone oil is used as a base fluid or sealing compound for downhole and surface valves.
• Mechanism: Its high thickness prevents it from being washed away by flowing crude, gases, or water. It remains liquid and slick at over 200°C, ensuring valves do not seize.

2. Torsional Vibration Dampers in Drilling Equipment

Drilling through hard rock formations causes violent structural vibrations and rotational shocks that can destroy drill strings and measurement-while-drilling (MWD) tools.

• Application: It is used as the internal damping fluid inside crankshaft dampers, drill string stabilizers, and heavy-duty downhole tools.
• Mechanism: The high viscosity provides immense shear resistance, absorbing and dissipating destructive kinetic energy into harmless heat.

3. Deep-Sea Subsea Instrumentation and Control Systems

Subsea equipment on the ocean floor experiences crushing hydrostatic pressures and near-freezing temperatures.

• Application: It acts as a pressure-compensating and dielectric insulation fluid for underwater sensors, junction boxes, and control pods.
• Mechanism: Its viscosity remains stable under immense pressure, it does not conduct electricity, and it forms a perfect barrier to exclude corrosive seawater from electronic housings.

4. Heavy-Duty Demulsification (Specialty Defoamer Concentrate)

While low-viscosity silicone oils are used as direct defoamers, high-viscosity 60,000 CPS PDMS is utilized as a raw concentrate for severe foaming challenges.

• Application: It is formulated into specialized emulsions to knock down severe foam in gas-oil separation plants (GOSPs) processing heavy, viscous crude oils.
• Mechanism: Even at parts-per-million (ppm) levels, it reduces the surface tension of thick oil films, causing gas bubbles to burst rapidly and preventing foam carryover into gas pipelines.

5. Calibration Fluid for Oilfield Rheometers

Mud logs and laboratory technicians must constantly test the viscosity of drilling muds and fracturing fluids using specialized rheometers (like Fann meters).

• Application: High-viscosity silicone oil is used as a certified reference standard to calibrate these testing instruments.
• Mechanism: Because PDMS is highly stable and does not degrade or evaporate over time, it provides an exact, unchanging viscosity benchmark for laboratory QA/QC.
