M.E.G. Mono Ethylene Glycol
CAS - 107 - 21 - 1

Application

Mono Ethylene Glycol (MEG) is critical in oil and gas for flow assurance, primarily acting as a thermodynamic hydrate inhibitor to prevent pipeline blockages, especially in deepwater/subsea systems. It absorbs water from natural gas streams, inhibiting hydrates and reducing corrosion. MEG is frequently injected at the wellhead and regenerated for reuse.

Key Applications of MEG in Oil & Gas:

  • Hydrate Inhibition: MEG is used in subsea pipelines to prevent the formation of methane hydrates—solid ice-like structures that can plug pipelines due to high pressure and low temperatures.
  • Natural Gas Dehydration: MEG acts as a desiccant, removing water from natural gas to prevent corrosion and hydrate formation during transportation.
  • Flow Assurance & Pipeline Safety: By reducing the freezing point of water, MEG prevents blockage in pipes, ensuring uninterrupted production, lowering maintenance costs, and extending equipment lifespan.
  • Wax Management: MEG can help in managing wax deposition in pipelines, assisting in flow assurance.

Process and Efficiency:

  • Injection & Recovery: MEG is injected at the wellhead (“rich” MEG), and after separating from the hydrocarbons, it is collected and processed through a reclamation unit to remove water, salt, and contaminants.
  • Regeneration: The wet, rich MEG is regenerated (distilled) to produce lean MEG, usually at over 99% purity, allowing it to be reused for up to 18–24 months.
