Application
Glutaraldehyde 50% (CAS 111-30-8) is primarily utilized as a high-performance biocide to manage microbial activity across various stages of extraction, production, and transport. Its rapid action and broad-spectrum efficacy make it essential for preventing damage caused by microorganisms like sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB).
Key Applications in Oil & Gas
- Water Injection Systems: It is added to injection fluids to eliminate bacterial growth in wellbores, preventing reservoir contamination and maintaining water quality for secondary recovery.
- Hydraulic Fracturing (Fracking): Glutaraldehyde is a common component in “fracking” fluids (e.g., as part of additives like Alpha 1427) to inhibit microbial growth that could otherwise obstruct oil and gas extraction.
- Corrosion Prevention: By controlling SRBs and other microorganisms, it prevents microbial-induced corrosion (MIC) in pipelines and equipment, extending the infrastructure’s lifespan.
- Drilling Fluids and Muds: Used as a preservative in drilling muds to maintain fluid stability and prevent microbial degradation.
- Oilfield Water Treatment: It controls biofouling and biofilm formation in recirculating water systems and cooling towers within refineries and processing plants.
- Gas Souring Prevention: It helps prevent the production of hydrogen sulfide often called “souring”—by neutralizing the bacteria responsible for its formation.
Performance Characteristics
- Efficiency: It performs significantly faster than other biocides like THPS (Tetrakis Hydroxymethyl Phosphonium Sulfate) at similar concentrations.
- Compatibility: It is stable across a wide pH range and compatible with many other oilfield chemicals, including corrosion inhibitors and certain surfactants.
- Low Corrosiveness: Despite being a potent chemical, it is favored for its relatively low corrosiveness to metal equipment compared to some oxidizing biocides.
Safety and Handling
- PPE Requirements: Due to its toxicity, personnel must wear nitrile or butyl rubber gloves (not latex), goggles, and face shields.
- Hazards: It is classified as toxic if inhaled or swallowed and can cause severe skin burns and eye damage.
