Application
Dodecyl Dimethyl Benzyl Ammonium Chloride (DDBAC), often referred to as benzalkonium chloride (BAC/BKC), is a quaternary ammonium cationic surfactant and non-oxidizing biocide extensively used in the oil and gas industry. It is primarily employed for flow assurance, microbiological control, and corrosion inhibition in production, transportation, and water treatment systems.
- Gas Hydrate Mitigation (Flow Assurance)
DDBAC acts as a highly effective Low Dosage Hydrate Inhibitor (LDHI), specifically acting as an Anti-Agglomerant (AA) and a Kinetic Hydrate Inhibitor (KHI).
- Anti-Agglomeration: It prevents small hydrate crystals from sticking together and plugging pipelines by making the hydrate surfaces hydrophobic and soft, allowing them to disperse in the oil phase.
- Performance: A concentration of around 0.35 wt% has been shown to effectively inhibit methane hydrate growth and agglomeration in oil-water systems, providing stable flow assurance.
- Advantage: It works efficiently in high-subcooling conditions (deep-offshore) where traditional inhibitors (like methanol) fail or are too expensive.
- Microbiological Control (Biocide)
DDBAC is a powerful broad-spectrum biocide used to control microbial growth, particularly Sulfate-Reducing Bacteria (SRB), which cause severe corrosion and souring in pipelines and storage tanks.
- Water Treatment: It is used in oilfield water injection systems and produced water treatment to eliminate algae and bacteria.
- Slime Removal: It possesses good slime-stripping properties, preventing bacterial slime from coating pipes and reducing efficiency.
- Dosage: As a bactericidal algaecide, a concentration of 50–100 mg/L is generally used, while 200–300 mg/L is used for sludge removal.
- Corrosion Inhibition
DDBAC serves as a cationic corrosion inhibitor that forms a protective, hydrophobic layer on metal surfaces (such as steel or aluminum alloys), shielding them from corrosive agents in water and oil.
- Mechanism: Its molecules adsorb onto the metal surface, creating a barrier that interrupts the electrochemical corrosion process.
- Application: It is particularly effective for protecting equipment in environments
- Demulsification and Oil Processing
DDBAC is used in oil treatment, specifically for breaking down emulsions in sour crude oil.
- Emulsion Breaking: It functions as a demulsifier and helps in the separation of oil and water, reducing the emulsification problems associated with, for example, the alkali washing of sour crude oil.
- Phase Transfer Catalyst: It is used as a phase transfer catalyst in refining processes to improve reaction rates
