Applications
Calcium Hydroxide, commonly referred to as slaked lime or hydrated lime in the industry, is a vital inorganic compound with the CAS number 1305-62-0. It is widely used in the oil and gas sector, particularly in drilling operations and refinery processing, due to its alkalinity and reactivity.
Key Applications in Oil and Gas
- Drilling Fluids (Mud): Calcium hydroxide is used in water-based, oil-based, and synthetic-based drilling fluids to raise the pH and maintain alkalinity, protecting drill pipe from corrosion. It is also essential for activating fatty-acid soap emulsifiers in oil-based muds.
- Acid Gas Removal: It is used to neutralize acidic gases such as hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide, which are common hazards in oil and gas production.
- Drill Cuttings and Waste Treatment: It is used to treat hazardous drill cuttings and oily sludge, improving their stability and reducing the leaching of salts and heavy metals before disposal.
- Wastewater Treatment: Refineries and petrochemical plants use it to treat wastewater to neutralize acids and precipitate heavy metals.
- CO2 Capture (Flue Gas): It is used in scrubbing units to remove and sulfur dioxide from flaring systems and flue gases, converting them into useful by-products like calcium carbonate (CaCO₃).
- Lubricant Additive: It is used to manufacture calcium soap-based additives that provide lubrication to drilling equipment.
