Application
In the oil and gas industry, EDTA-2Na (Ethylenediaminetetraacetic Acid Disodium Salt, CAS 60-00-4) is a high-purity (99%) chelating agent used to sequester metal ions like calcium, magnesium, and iron to prevent scale formation and improve operational efficiency.
Primary Applications in Oil & Gas
- Scale Removal and Prevention: It binds to calcium and barium ions in formation water to dissolve or prevent the precipitation of calcium carbonate and barium sulfate scales in pipelines, valves, and wellbores.
- Well Stimulation (Acidizing): It is used as a standalone stimulation fluid or an alternative to hydrochloric acid (HCl) in high-temperature or sensitive carbonate reservoirs to create conductive “wormholes” with lower corrosion risks to equipment.
- Iron Control: It stabilizes ferric (Fe³⁺) and ferrous (Fe²⁺) ions during acidizing treatments, preventing them from precipitating as damaging hydroxides or sulfides that can plug reservoir pores.
- Drilling Fluid Additive: It improves the stability and rheological properties of drilling fluids under harsh downhole conditions by masking metal ion impurities.
- Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR): It can alter rock wettability and reduce interfacial tension (IFT) between oil and water, facilitating the mobilization of trapped oil in the reservoir.
- Equipment Cleaning: It is applied to remove mineral scale and iron sulfide deposits from surface facilities, heat exchangers, and boilers.
Technical Benefits
- High Temperature Stability: Effective at temperatures up to 400°F (204°C), making it suitable for deep, hot reservoirs.
- Low Corrosivity: Unlike conventional strong acids, EDTA-2Na is less aggressive toward steel and chrome tubing, often reducing or eliminating the need for separate corrosion inhibitors.
- Versatile pH Performance: Functions effectively across a wide range of pH levels (typically 4–13) to target different types of deposits.
