Application
Formic Acid (85% concentration, CAS 64-18-6) is primarily used in the oil and gas industry for well stimulation and corrosion control, particularly in high-temperature environments. It is valued for being an environmentally friendly, biodegradable alternative to mineral acids like hydrochloric acid (HCl).
Well Stimulation (Acidizing):
Matrix Acidizing: It is injected at low pressure to dissolve carbonate minerals and scale deposits near the wellbore to restore permeability.
Acid Fracturing: Used at high pressure to etch channels in rock formations (especially carbonate reservoirs), enhancing the flow of oil and gas.
High-Temperature Advantage: Formic acid is often preferred in reservoirs with temperatures reaching up to 400°F because it is easier to inhibit against pipe corrosion than HCl at such extremes.
Corrosion Inhibition:
Intensifier: It is frequently added to hydrochloric acid-based fluids to intensify the performance of corrosion inhibitors.
Decomposition: In strong acids under downhole conditions, it can dehydrate into carbon monoxide (CO), which itself acts as a corrosion inhibitor.
Drilling and Completion Fluids:
Building Block: Formic acid is the starting material for producing formate salts (e.g., potassium formate, cesium formate).
HPHT Drilling: These formate brines are critical for drilling and completion fluids in high-pressure, high-temperature (HPHT) reservoir sections.
Equipment Cleaning and Scale Removal:
Descaling: Used to remove calcium carbonate and other mineral scales from wellbore tubulars and surface equipment.
Maintenance: Employed for cleaning drilling equipment and industrial installations to prevent blockages.
